Can Material Testing Equipment Help In Additive Tests?

Fiber material has been used to reinforce paving materials for long time in distinct parts of the world. These materials are great to use in stone matrix asphalt and open-graded mixtures to prevent draindown of the binder from aggregate particles. But nowadays, building and construction material makers have started using fibers in dense-graded mixtures to enhance stability and resistance to cracking. They use special material testing equipments to perform additive tests to determine strength of the material.

Let’s learn about fiber materials and mixtures used by them for asphalt preparation.

There are several forms and types of fibers used in asphalt mixtures, either regularly or experimentally. Among all the types of fibers, cellulose, polymer, and mineral fiber are most common.

Cellulose-  This fiber is sourced from woody plants; however, some are obtained from recycled newspapers. These fibers tend to be branching with high absorption. It means that this high absorbing nature helps cellulose fibers hold on to high binder contents in asphalt mixtures. These fibers are available in loose form or in pellets.

Mineral- Either it is natural or manufactured mineral fiber, both can be used for mixture. It is also known as mineral wool or rock wool, manufactured by melting minerals and later forming fibers through spinning or extruding methid. Minerals used to form mineral fibers involve slag or a blend of slag and rock, brucite, rock, steel, carbon, etc.

Synthetic polymer fibers- Polyester, aramid, polypropylene, and combinations of polymers are commonly used.

Plant based fibers- Such fibers are being used in more limited areas. These are obtained from woody fibers like jute, straw, and hemp, leaves, and seeds. They may also be fruit fibers, such as cotton, coconut, coir, and palm.

Specialized material testing equipments help in determining apt ratio of the fibers to make the mixture precise for construction purpose. Technicians know the way to test the asphalt mixture using these equipments. You can get in touch with them and get expert advice.
